Beauty reviews of Korean cosmetic products will continue into next week. Today, I would like to share some really great news and some very disappointing news.

The wonderful news:
On the 27th of this month, Yojiya will be opening a (permanent!) store in Hotel Okura Tokyo. The traditional Japanese cosmetics company has also started selling Maccha (green-tea) oil-blotting paper. You can purchase the blotting paper online. This is a seasonal item only available for a limited time.

The extremely sad news:
Stila is leaving Japan. Stila counters will disappear from Japanese department stores by the end of August and the Stila Japan online store has already shut down. I really wish I had ordered two Barbie Face Shimmer Powders. sob

Well, I have lots of new products to review, including new Benefit fragrances, Alima Pure samples, a new Lipstick Queen lip color and more.

よーじや Aloe あぶらとり紙 (Oil-blotting paper)

日本の伝統コスメ会社よーじやの東京都内にある販売店とカフェの一つは、羽田空港の第１ターミナルにあります。そこでは天然のアロエを原材料に使用したアロエあぶらとり紙（以前は国外販売のみでした）を購入することが出来ます。よーじやの全てのあぶらとり紙と同じように、アロエも肌を刺激したり乾燥させたりすることなく、あぶらを取ってくれます。それでも、限定販売されたアロエよりも少しスムーズな柚子のあぶらとり紙の方が好きですが、アロエのあぶらとり紙は柚子の代わりとして、またちょっとしたお土産にも良いです。

Traditional Japanese cosmetics company Yojiya's one boutique and café in the Tokyo-area is located in Terminal 1 of the Haneda Airport. There, you can purchase their (previously overseas-only) Aloe oil-blotting paper made of natural aloe ingredients. Like all of Yojiya's blotting papers, the Aloe paper does an excellent job of absorbing oil without irritating or drying out your skin. Although, I still prefer their limited edition Yuzu paper, which is a hint smoother, the Aloe blotting paper is a nice substitute and makes a great little gift.


他のよーじやのあぶらとり紙と違い、羽田空港で売っているあぶらとり紙には「あぶらとり紙」の誕生に関する短い英語の説明がついています。これは空港でよーじやの商品を購入して海外の友人に日本のお土産として渡そうと考えている人々のことを考えた、素晴らしいアイデアだと思います。でも、英語の説明にはいくつか問題点・間違いがあります。例えば、「バイキンを取り除く」という説明が「“宝石”を取り除く」と間違えて書かれていたり、「舞妓」という言葉の意味や彼女達がどのような女性であるかを説明することなく使用したりしているところです。多くの外国人が「芸者」という言葉を耳にしたことはあると思いますが、ほとんどの人は「舞妓」という言葉を知らないと思います。ですので、「舞妓、芸者の見習い」や「修行中の芸者」という簡単な説明をつけると非常に分かりやすくなると思います。西洋の国々において芸者は人々を強く魅了する物のひとつであり、より多くの外国人女性がよーじやの商品に芸者が使われていると知ったら、よーじやは海外でより人気が高まると思います。

Unlike other Yojiya blotting papers, the blotting sheets sold at Haneda airport contain a short explanation of the origin of the aburatorigami in English. This is a wonderful idea as many people who purchase Yojiya's products at the airport plan to give them to their overseas friends as Japanese souvenirs. However, there are some problems with English text. Instead of eliminating germs, the aloe extract in their blotting paper apparently eliminates "gems." They keep referring to the "maiko women" of Japan without any explanation as to who these "maiko" women are. While most have heard of the geisha, few outside Japan are aware of the maiko. Something as simple as "maiko, geisha apprentices," or "geisha-in-training" would be helpful. There is a growing fascination with the geisha in the West and if more women found out that the geisha use/used Yojiya's products, I think the company's popularity would increase overseas.


とはいうものの、よーじやの英語による説明の大部分は分かりやすいものになっていますし、あぶらとり紙は非常に高品質な商品です。もし、京都もしくは羽田／成田／関西空港に立ち寄る機会がありましたら、よーじやのお店に立ち寄ることを強くお勧めします。海外配送を行っているかどうかは分かりませんが、よーじやにはオンラインショップもあります。

For the most part, however, Yojiya's English is understandable and their oil-blotting products are excellent. If you ever happen to find yourself in Kyoto or Haneda/Narita/Kansai airport, you should most definitely check their stores out. They also have an online store, although I am not sure if they are still shipping overseas at the moment.

Jill Stuart Blotting Paper N and Case

ジェリーアイカラーのクリスタルスカイと同時に、ジルスチュアートのサマーコレクションのブロッティングペーパーNとケースを買いました。ソフトケースは1,800円であぶら取り紙７０枚も入っています。あぶら取り紙のリフィルもありまして、７０枚のパックは525円です。ティッシュケースと同じように、ジルのケースはあぶら取り紙を一つ一つ取るように出来ています。

Along with the Jelly Eye Color in Crystal Sky, I also purchased Jill Stuart's Blotting Paper N and case from their new summer collection. The soft case is 1,800 yen and comes with 70 sheets of oil-blotting paper. Refills of the oil-blotting paper cost 525 yen and come in packs of 70 sheets. The case works much like a tissue case in that it allows you to pull one blotting paper sheet out at a time.


ジルのブロッティングペーパーNは硬いパウダー用のあぶら取り紙ですが、他のパウダータイプより全然薄いです。しかし、この紙は少し粗くて自分の肌をちょっと乾燥させたりします。乾燥肌や敏感肌の方にはお勧め出来ません。でもケースはとても可愛いらしいし鏡も付いているので便利なのであんまりガッカリしてはいません。ジルスチュアートのファンにとってはブロッティングペーパーNのケースは良いお手頃なアイテムだと思います。でも良いあぶら取り紙を探している方にはよーじやの柚子あぶら取り紙を勧めします。

Blotting Paper N is the hard, powder-type blotting paper that is actually much thinner that most other powder-types. However, I find that the paper feels a little rough and the powder formula leaves my skin dry. I would not recommend this paper to anyone with dry or sensitive skin. The case, however, is charming and comes with a mirror which is quite useful, so I am not completely disappointed with my purchase. If you are a Jill Stuart fan, the Blotting Paper N case makes a nice, inexpensive item to add to your collection. But if you are looking for some quality oil-blotting paper, I would urge you to consider Yojiya's Yuzu paper.

Maquillage Oil Blotting Paper

A couple of weeks ago I received Maquillage's oil blotting paper pack. There are two different types of Oil blotting paper ("aburatorigami"). There is the thick, hard type such as Shiseido's Pureness oil-control blotting paper, and then there is the thin, soft type more common among Kyoto brands, such as Yojiya. The Maquillage oil blotting paper is of the soft, thin variety. While thin oil blotting paper tends to be more smooth and gentle on the skin, it also tears easily. Maquillage's paper is surpringly sturdy and has the same level of quality as Yojiya's reknown blotting papers. I'm not sure exactly how many sheets are in the pack but I'm estimating there are about 100 sheets.

２週間ぐらい前にマキアージュのあぶらとり紙を貰いました。あぶらとり紙には大体２類あります。１つは厚いくて硬いタイプで（例えば資生堂のピュアネスのオイルコントロール紙）もう１つは京都で多い、よーじやに使われている薄くて柔らかいタイプです。マキアージュのあぶらとり紙はソフトで薄いタイプです。薄いタイプのあぶらとり紙は大体スムーズで肌に優しいですが、簡単に破れます。ですがマキアージュの紙はびっくりするほど耐久性があってよーじやの人気あぶらとり紙ぐらい良いものです。１つのセットに何枚入っているか分かりませんが、多分１００枚ぐらい入っていると思います。

Yojiya at Isetan

I went to Isetan's Shinjuku store to check out the latest products from Yojiya and the Yojiya cafe. Because they were only there for a limited time, it was incredibly crowded and I never had a chance to try out the cafe. Even the check out line was long and there were maybe ten different registers at the counter.

伊勢丹の新宿店へ、よーじやの新しい商品とよーじやカフェを試しに行きました。限定イベントだったので、とても混んでいてカフェには行けませんでした。レジの列もとても長くて、レジが１０個ぐらいあったと思います。

Point makeup products, base makeup products, skincare products, tools, and many accessories were on display. Most women were interested in the oil-blotting paper ("aburatorigami") which is what Yojiya is most famous for and I picked up a small catalog of their makeup products to see what else they were offering.

ポイントメーク、ベースメーク、スキンケアの商品、ツールや色々な小物がありました。ほどんどの女性は油取り紙にとても興味津々で、私はよーじやの他の商品を見るためにメーク商品のカタログを手に入れました。




I bought a few items for friends and myself but I did not purchase any of their makeup products. I was interested in the new, wisteria-colored lip gloss but it was very sticky despite its pretty shimmer. (I think Lunasol's upcoming Lucent Purple lip gloss may be a better buy). The lip colors and eye shadows were very pigmented but there wasn't a color that interested me. The face powers looked quite beautiful and I would have loved to have one in "snow" or "ice," but sadly, I am allergic to some of their ingredients. I did pick up a face puff, however, and some yuzu oil-blotting paper.

友人へのお土産や自分に物を少し買いましたが、メーク商品は買いませんでした。ようじやの新しい藤色のリップグロスに興味がありました。綺麗に輝きましたがベタベタしました。（Lunasolのこれから発売になるLucent Purpleのグロスの方がいいかもしれません。）口紅やアイシャドウはとても鮮やかで発色も良かったですが、欲しい色はなかったです。フェイスパウダーは素敵で、雪の色と氷の色は特に好きでしたが、皮膚病でアレルギーがある原料が入っているので使えません。しかし、フェイスパフを買いまして、ゆずの油取り紙も買いました。



Yojiya's regular oil-blotting paper is like most oil-blotting papers you come across in Kyoto. They come in packs of thin sheets and are somewhat smooth compared to the thicker varieties. The Yuzu paper is even smoother, however. Sometimes oil-blotting paper can be a bit rough on the skin and leave it a little dry. The Yuzu keeps my face smooth and is much better than anything else I've ever tried. This is definitely my favourite oil-blotting paper ever and I highly recommend it to anyone interested.

よーじやの普通のあぶら取り紙は他の京都のあぶら取り紙と変わりません。薄いシートがパックに沢山入っていて、厚いシート類よりスムーズです。ゆずのあぶら取り紙は特に滑らかです。時としてあぶら取り紙は肌にはちょっとキツく、乾燥させます。でもゆずは逆に肌をスムーズにし、他のあぶらとり紙より全然いいと思います。これは私が一番好きなあぶらとり紙のひとつですので、是非お勧めします。

Even though I cannot use some of their products, I am very happy that Yojiya is still around. While there are other Japanese cosmetics companies producing traditional Japanese beauty products, few are as old and as extensive as Yojiya.

皮膚病で使えない商品はありますが、よーじやがあって嬉しいです。他にも日本の伝統的な化粧品のコスメ会社がありますが、よーじやほど歴史がある、商品がある会社はないです。
